Everyone knows how outrageously overpriced a wedding dress can be (and for that matter, anything that starts with wedding). But, until you start shopping, you may not realize how expensive the veil can also be. There are some alternatives to buying $300 - $500 veil in your bridal salon.
First of all, who really needs a veil. The concept is a bit antiquated, although many aspects of modern weddings are. The veil was meant to keep the groom from seeing the bride before the ceremony. At the end, when he lifts the veil, it symbolizes his dominance, and his taking of his bride. So, how about skipping the veil? It could be a huge cost saver.
If you still want one, try finding a used veil. Search ebay for affordable veils that are still in great shape. Consider wearing your mother’s veil. Maybe you don’t find her dress fashionable anymore, but adding her veil could add just the right touch of nostalgia and something both old and borrowed.
Or, why not make your own? If you look at most veils, they are simply long pieces of fabric with finished edges. It isn’t so difficult to make one. Go to a fabric/craft store and find a pattern for making a veil. At the same store, you can purchase tulle or lace for the fabric of the veil. You should also be able to find extras there. You could add silk ribbon to the edge, faux pearls, a tiara or combs to attach the veil. You don’t have to be a seamstress to do this and the final cost could be as low as $3o!
